David Gainer became United States Consul General in Perth in August 2019. Consul General Gainer had worked at the US Consulate General in Melbourne and also handled US-Australian relations during an assignment in Washington, DC. He began serving as a US Foreign Service Officer in Phnom Penh, Cambodia as assistant and then as acting public affairs officer. He subsequently led public affairs endeavours at the US Consulate in Chennai, India and the US Embassies in Prague, Czech Republic and Turkey where he was spokesperson. Mr Gainer was the Visas Chief at the US Consulate in Melbourne; and deputy director of the State Department’s Officer of Australia, New Zealand, and Pacific Island Affairs. Prior to joining the Foreign Service, Mr Gainer taught budget and appropriation classes for the US Department of Treasury. He holds Masters degrees in American history, African history, and Liberal Studies; and a BA in History. Mr Gainer taught secondary school as a Peace Corps volunteer in Malawi and was also a disc jockey, hosting weekly music shows on a variety of radio stations.
