Belgian born Aurélien Scannella became artistic director of West Australian Ballet in 2013, and acting executive director in June 2022.
After training at the prestigious Royal Ballet School of Flanders, Aurélien danced with the Royal Ballet of Flanders, Deutsche Oper am Rhein, State Theatre Wiesbaden, Deutsche Oper Berlin and Ballett Basel.
In 2008 Aurélien retired from dancing, and quickly becoming one of the industry’s most sought after Ballet Masters working with Dutch National Ballet, Finnish National Ballet, Swedish National Ballet, Ballet Opera Bordeaux, Ballet Opera Lyon, Ballet Preljocaj, Scapino Ballet, National Ballet of Estonia, Bejart Ballet Lausanne, Ballet du Rhin and Hong Kong Ballet.
His repertoire includes all major classical ballets, as well as extensive experience in contemporary styles and has choreographed two of West Australian Ballet’s smash hits, Classical Ballet cornerstones; The Nutcracker and Giselle.
Since leading West Australian Ballet, he’s substantially grown the technical standard and size of the Company and as of 2022, has introduced 14 new full length ballets along with 42 new contemporary works.
