In August 2019, Mr Burrell became the chief of staff to the Shadow Minister for Trade and Resources. In August 2021, he was appointed chief advisor of external affairs & communications at Rio Tinto Iron Ore where he will be responsible for the company's government, media and Indigenous relations.
