
English financier and conservationist Martin Copley founded the Australian Wildlife Conservancy in 1995. Its original asset was a piece of land he had purchased in 1991 in South West WA in order to conserve natural habitat. Upon his death in 2014, Mr Copley's will set out the provision of an initial sum of $61.2 million to the Martin Copley Will Trust with the stated aim of supporting the AWC, The Spinifex Trust, and any charitable environmental organisation as determined by the trustees. By 2018, AWC iwas the largest private owner of land for conservation in Australia, with 27 properties, protecting endangered wildlife across more than 4.6 million hectares in iconic regions such as the Kimberley, Cape York, Lake Eyre and the Top End.
