Pilot Energy is in the final stages of a farm-out process for its wholly-owned WA-481-P gas exploration permit, with offers from short-listed parties due to close before the end of the month. The company’s 8605 square kilometre offshore tenure extends between Cervantes and Geraldton and is the biggest Commonwealth offshore exploration license in Australia, embracing 130 graticular blocks in shallow water along Western Australia’s Mid West coast.
Pilot Energy is in the final stages of a farm-out process for its wholly-owned WA-481-P gas exploration permit, with offers from short-listed parties due to close before the end of the month.
The company’s 8605 square kilometre offshore tenure extends between Cervantes and Geraldton and is the biggest Commonwealth offshore exploration license in Australia, embracing 130 graticular blocks in shallow water along Western Australia’s Mid West coast.
The permit area includes the Dunsborough oil discovery and is also strategically positioned next to the onshore Beagle Ridge oil and Dandaragan Trough gas discoveries in the Perth Basin.
Notably, Pilot’s grounds also include the 45-billion-cubic-feet Frankland 2C gas field discovery, which has a carbon dioxide content of just 1.5 per cent. That sits well below the maximum 3 per cent permitted for the Dampier-Bunbury and Parmelia gas pipelines, enabling gas to be injected directly into the pipelines without pre-treatment.
Perhaps most significantly, though, the permit area also encloses the giant Leander gas prospect, which the company describes as a drill-ready, four-way dip-closed anticline. The structure represents a perfect gas trap, with a mean recoverable resource of 1.1 trillion cubic feet of gas and a geological chance of success estimated at between 24 and 36 per cent.
Leander lies only 15km offshore west of Pilot’s Cliff Head platform in the proven Kingia-High Cliff gas fairway.
The company’s farmout process aims to secure joint venture partners interested in undertaking focused exploration centred around the Leander gas prospect.
Accordingly, Pilot has provided prospective parties with a conceptual program that would see exploration success at Leander being fast-tracked to market through the company’s existing Cliff Head pipelines and offshore infrastructure corridors. The plan targets first gas as early as 2030 at a stable flow rate of 150 million cubic feet per day.
Given strong industry interest in Leander, based on the current seismic dataset, Pilot has elected to fold the timing of both its planned Eureka 3D seismic survey and the first exploration well into the final farm-out commercial negotiations rather than committing to a 2026 seismic shoot.
Pilot says multiple contractors have indicated that they can acquire the 3D seismic data within the CY2027 operational window.
Meanwhile, the company continues to direct its own capital and management focus toward its Mid-West clean energy project, which would repurpose Cliff Head into Australia’s first integrated offshore carbon capture and storage (CCS) and renewable energy hub. The plan also includes developing blue hydrogen and clean ammonia production for export to Asia.
The company’s cashflow is being further supported by its $5.9 million petroleum resource rent tax (PRRT) debt funding, which was activated in October.
The PRRT facility allows companies such as Pilot Energy to finance ongoing abandonment, decommissioning and rehabilitation expenditures at its Cliff Head field.
When the facility was secured, Pilot Energy managing director Brad Lingo said it was a strong outcome for Pilot and the Cliff Head joint venture, significantly reducing the upfront funding that would otherwise be needed for decommissioning.
With a competitive farm-out running over one of Australia’s largest offshore permits, and a drill-ready trillion-cubic-feet gas target just kilometres from existing infrastructure, the company is steadily de-risking its significant exploration ambitions.
For the punters, Pilot appears to offer a rare blend of near-term optionality and longer-dated upside – where a single well at Leander could reshape the story, while Cliff Head quietly evolves into a nationally significant clean-energy hub.
