Norfolk Metals has delivered more strong copper hits from its Chilean Carmen project, while locking in firm commitments for $2.1 million in fresh capital. Results confirmed high-grade copper sulphide mineralisation at depth, with funds to be used to drive phase two drilling and support resource definition across a highly prospective copper belt.
Fresh, high-grade drill hits from Norfolk Metals’ Carmen copper project in Chile have sharpened the company’s push to propel its rich copper sulphide system into the next phase of growth. Momentum has been further supercharged by firm institutional commitments for a $2.1 million placement, giving Norfolk both the results and the firepower to press ahead.
The news could hardly be better timed, with copper prices ripping to all-time highs overnight at US$6.15 (A$9.26) a pound, fuelled by surging demand from the global renewables build-out and escalating defence requirements.
Final assay results from the remaining six reverse circulation drill holes at Carmen have confirmed the presence of rich primary copper sulphide mineralisation within the Carmen Main area, which remains open at depth and continues to deliver results consistent with historical data.
Key intercepts from the program included 32 metres grading 1.3 per cent copper from 97m, along with 26m at 0.8 per cent copper from 37m in a separate hole. The company says the results have firmed confidence in the continuity of mineralisation and underline the scope to grow the resource footprint as drilling pushes deeper and wider across the system.
Alongside the drilling success, Norfolk has secured firm commitments for a $2.1 million placement, attracting strong interest from sophisticated resource investors. The placement was anchored by cornerstone investors who came knocking on the company’s door themselves - a quiet but telling sign the market thinks Norfolk may be onto something big.
Funds from the raise will go straight back into the ground, finalising planning and kicking off phase two of the maiden drilling campaign while also shoring up working capital.
The next drilling push will widen coverage across known mineralised zones and take aim at a suite of high-priority targets, including step-out diamond drilling into untested induced polarisation anomalies such as the Higueritas Belt, as Norfolk looks to expand the project’s footprint materially.
Carmen is a copper-dominant project with added gold and silver potential. It sits in the west-Andean foothills and is readily accessible from the coastal city of La Serena, placing it within a well-established mining district supported by infrastructure and skilled labour.
More broadly, the project also lies within Chile’s copper-rich Huasco Province, a geological neighbourhood renowned for hosting some of the world’s largest porphyry copper systems. Notably, Carmen is just 16 kilometres from Teck–Newmont’s Relincho and Fortuna deposits, which together host a staggering proven and probable mineral reserve of 16.6 billion pounds of copper, 8.9 million ounces of gold and 464 million pounds of molybdenum.
Carmen itself has seen a long history of exploration, with almost 150 drill holes completed for 10,000 metres, some dating back to the late 1800’s. Evidence of small-scale, high-grade artisanal mining is also present across the project area, often considered a strong indicator of near-surface mineralisation.
Modern geophysical work carried out in the early 2000’s identified an elongated chargeability anomaly between 100 metres and 300 metres wide and extending for approximately 2.4 kilometres. Follow-up mapping and soil sampling in 2004 confirmed the extent of a copper oxide zone that has since become a key focus for Norfolk.
The near-surface oxide supergene blanket is considered suitable for heap leach processing, supported by historical column tests that delivered copper recoveries of between 72 and 82 per cent. The blanket carries all the hallmarks of manto-style supergene copper mineralisation and is viewed by management as a natural fit for low-strip, fast payback development scenarios.
Norfolk is steadily refining its understanding of the structural controls, geochemistry and the overall scale of mineralisation across both the oxide blanket and the underlying sulphide system. Nearly 1,000 metres of historical mineralised diamond drill core has been quarter-cut and submitted for assay, with results expected in the coming weeks. Those results will feed into an updated geological model, which will then be used to support the eventual delivery of a JORC-compliant resource.
With copper prices powering to all-time highs and global demand continuing to strengthen, Norfolk’s advance into the Carmen–Tabaco Belt is shaping up as a timely and increasingly compelling copper development story.
