Baltinas’ $27m Cottesloe build approved

Perth architect Barry Baltinas has added another Cottesloe project to his portfolio, a seven-storey development next door to another one of his Marine Parade build.
The state government’s State Development Assessment Unit has recommended the $27 million project be refused or approved with a set of conditions.
At a meeting that spanned nearly three hours yesterday, the Western Australian Planning Commission approved architecture firm Baltinas’ proposal to build on 122 Marine Parade.
The proposed development comprises eight apartments across the seven-storey build, a 22-bay basement carpark, and a ground floor restaurant tenancy.
Baltinas founder Barry Baltinas said forward works construction would begin in the coming months.
“We are thrilled to get the nod to begin work on the next phase of our 122 Marine Parade Cottesloe project and believe the 88 percent public support for this development obtained during the public consultation period underscores the community’s desire to see this part of Cottesloe revitalised with thoughtful architectural design that breaks new ground for Perth,” he said.
“After 20 months of working meticulously with our team of consultants and the WA Planning Commission to receive this approval, we are looking forward to getting the next phase of this landmark project underway.
“We’re also delighted that this milestone means work can begin in earnest on our neighbouring development, Meridian Cottesloe.”

Mr Baltinas said construction was set to start on that later this year.
“We believe these two important projects will bring a new lease on life to this prestigious pocket of Cottesloe,” he said.
“We are clear this is a once in a lifetime opportunity to craft beautiful and timeless landmark architecture and are honoured to be able to activate this space for the enjoyment of all for a long time to come.”
The Town of Cottesloe has objected to the projects, with chief executive Matthew Scott presenting against the development at the WAPC meeting.
He said the development did not respect the scale and built form of neighbouring properties.
The project site has also been subject to a legal dispute between the vendors and developer-builder Gary Dempsey.
Mr Dempsey’s proposal for a 12-dwelling complex on the 120 Marine Parade had been approved.
However, Mr Dempsey claimed the vendors, Perth-based doctors Julie Lai Wai Ng, Justin Jamie Peng Yan Ng and Michael Chinh Nguyen, sold the site to Mr Baltinas without warning him.
