Sam Walsh AO is a distinguished business leader and philanthropist, currently serving as a Non-Executive Director of Mitsui & Co in Japan, and holding senior roles across major community and charitable organisations including the Royal Flying Doctor Service (WA), Theatre 180, the Perth Diocesan Trust, and the Anglican Community Fund.
Beginning his professional journey in senior leadership roles with General Motors and Nissan Australia, Mr Walsh previously led Rio Tinto as chief executive from 2013 to 2016, concluding a 25-year career with the global mining group. He has also been appointed an Officer of the Order of Australia, named Western Australia Citizen of the Year (Industry & Commerce), and awarded Japan’s Order of the Rising Sun.
A Fellow of numerous professional and academic institutes, he holds a Bachelor of Commerce from the University of Melbourne, a fellowship from Kettering University, and honorary doctorates from UWA and ECU. His contributions have also been recognised with honours including the AusIMM Institute Medal, the AICD Gold Medal, and a Lifetime Achievement Award from the University of Melbourne.
