BHP Billiton has approved a $275 million upgrade of the Worsley alumina refinery near Collie.
The project will lift alumina production by 250,000 tonnes per annum to a capacity of 3.5 million tonnes. BHP Billiton has hinted that further production increases will occur.
BHPB president aluminium Alex Vanselow said “the project is a rapid response to meet the strong and growing demand for alumina”.
WA Business News has previously reported that capacity may be increased to as much as 4.5 million tonnes.
The Worsley upgrade coincides with Alcoa’s $440 million efficiency upgrade of its Pinjarra alumina refinery, lifting capacity by 800,000 tonnes to 4.2 million tonnes.
