World-first open day

THE State’s major mining operations will open their doors to the public on Sunday October 7 for Australia’s first Mine Open Day to celebrate the centenary of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy of WA.

In all, 39 giant mining operations will be open to everyone in the community from Kununurra to Kalgoorlie and Capel.

It is the first time in the world that an event of this scale has been undertaken in the mining industry.

Chamber president Peter Lalor said the Mine Open Day was a unique opportunity to gain an insight into how the modern mining industry operates in areas like production, refining, health and safety and the environment.

“We want people to come out and see first hand what is involved and how mining has a positive impact on the future of the State and the communities in which they operate,” he said.

Among the mines opening throughout WA are those producing iron ore, gold, mineral sands, alumina, diamonds, nickel, tantalum and copper.
