The resolute determination in 2001 to build a world-class office furniture manufacturing facility in Perth has brought freestanding office furniture manufacturer Designtec substantial growth in the marketplace.

Established in 1984 and bought by the current owners in 1992, Landsdale-based Designtec operates solely as a wholesale manufacturer and sells mainly to selected retailers across Western Australia, ranging from Busselton in the south, to Kalgoorlie in the east and Geraldton in the north.

In 2001, following the retirement of one of the original directors, proprietors Sten and Rita Campbell made a decision to build a world-class office furniture manufacturing facility.

At the time, annual sales were about $1.2 million. A minimum target of $10 million in sales by 2010 was set with the proviso that profit margins would not be sacrificed in pursuit of revenue growth.

Today, the company is on track to achieve this target, with sales growing to more than $5.1 million in 2005-2006, with a forecast of more than $6 million next financial year.

The company’s staff numbers, since 2003-2004, have grown from 16 to 24.

Designtec believes its brand profile, product range and associated business model are well defined and proven in the marketplace, with high levels of customer acceptance and satisfaction.

During the past two years, financial resources, in particular, have become more available and the company has begun to establish a middle management team to drive planned future growth and further develop the business beyond its WA base into selected national markets.

The company has recently started its next phase of growth and development with the relocation to a new manufacturing facility in Wangara, capital investment in state-of-the-art (German made) manufacturing equipment and control systems and further development of middle-management infrastructure. This expansion plan, involving total capital expenditure in the region of $5 million will commence in early 2007 and be completed within six months.
