Work to start on $15m Rockingham revamp

Civil engineering contractor Ertech has been chosen to deliver the first stage of the City of Rockingham’s plans for a $15.7 million revitalisation of its foreshore precinct, with construction to start on Monday.

The first stage of the Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation project will involve three key areas – Railway Terrace, the Beach Plaza and The Boardwalk.

On Railway Terrace, parking will be modified to improve safety and the pedestrian experience, as well as create a new streetscape featuring artwork and trees, which will allow for alfresco dining.

The Railway Terrace horseshoe carpark will be transformed into a new space called the Beach Plaza – a public multi-purpose space the city hopes will become a key area for major events and celebrations.

The city’s existing boardwalk will be expanded to facilitate more alfresco dining, as well as better movement of pedestrians and to provide a better connection to the foreshore’s north-facing beach.

The site will be open to the public over the summer school holidays, at which time construction will be paused before recommencing in February.

City of Rockingham Mayor Barry Sammels said the project would breathe new life into the area.

“The Rockingham Beach Foreshore Revitalisation will change the face of the foreshore precinct as we know it,” he said.

“While there will be some slight inconveniences during construction, an improved foreshore will benefit both locals and visitors well into the future, becoming a place that is recognised on a local, state and national level.

“It will also enable local businesses to capitalise on the unique features of this iconic location and leverage its increasing popularity into even greater success.”

Stage one of the project is anticipated for completion September 2019.
