Wholesale electricity trade under way

THE state government has commenced energy trading under Western Australia’s new wholesale electricity market. Energy Minister Fran Logan said the move marked a significant milestone in the government’s electricity reform program. He said the wholesale electricity market would provide a more efficient mechanism for energy industry participants to trade electricity within the South West Interconnected System. “Importantly, the new market will provide greater opportunities for the renewable energy sector and for demand side management,” he said. The Independent Market Operator, established in December 2004, will administer and oversee the ongoing implementation of the wholesale electricity market.
