WaveMaster heads to Europe

Henderson-based WaveMaster International launched Australia’s largest exported aluminium monohull ferry to Europe recently, one week ahead of schedule.

The high-speed, fifty metre ferry, already christened Speedy by its German owner Warrings, will spend the next few weeks under-going sea trials before delivery to Germany where it will operate tourist routes in the North Sea.

WaveMaster manager sales and marketing Lou Pittorino said the ferry was one of the first major sales made by the company in the Northern European region following the sale of a smaller monohull ferry to Ireland last year.

“We are expecting these ferries to generate more interest in Wave-Master vessels in this region to consolidate Europe as our largest export market,” Mr Pittorino said.

Mr Pittorino acknowledged the assistance of Austrade’s Frankfurt post in introducing WaveMaster to Warrings management and alerting the company to upcoming opportunities in the region.

Austrade national manager marine Craig Banks said that WaveMaster’s success was not only a great export win for WA and Australia, but would act as an unique ‘moving billboard’ – advertising WaveMaster’s world-class vessels and Australia’s marine industry capability overseas.

“Austalia’s fast ferry industry has been one of Australia’s greatest recent export success stories, holding an unprecedented 45 per cent share of the international market,” Mr Banks said.

“In the last decade, Australia’s commercial shipbuilding industry has grown into one of the country’s most export focussed sectors with some 95 per cent of production destined for export.

“This sector now represents Australia’s fourth largest manufactured export following automotive parts, information technology and pharmaceuticals,” he said.
