The Western Australian arm of WHBO Group has won a contract to carry out upgrades across a large section of the Great Eastern Highway, in a project worth a total of $36 million.

WBHO Infrastructure will design and construct 15 new passing lanes on the Great Eastern Highway between Southern Cross and Kalgoorlie for Main Roads.

The upgrade covers 44 kilometres of passing lanes, which will be placed over the 225km section of highway.

Eight new eastbound lands and seven westbound lanes will be built, each with an average length of 3km.

The project has been funded by the state government’s Royalties for Regions program.

Site works began this month, while work is expected to be completed by March 2017.

“The project will deliver significant improvements to this important route,” WBHO general manager western region Will Grobler said.

“The highway is the key link between Perth and the eastern states and more than 1,200 vehicles use it daily.

“Providing more passing opportunities will enhance safety and improve the efficiency of freight movements.”
