Figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries show that 10,838 vehicles were retailed in June, down 726 units, or 6.3 per cent, on the same time last year.
Over the year to the end of June, vehicle sales fell 18.5 per cent compared to the same time last year.
The June result compares favourably with the previous months this calendar year, which each experienced a double digit percentage fall compared to the corresponding period in 2008.
Last month, 5,349 passenger vehicles were sold, down 14.7 per cent on June last year while sales of new sports utility vehicles were down 5.4 per cent to 2,301 units.
The amount of light commercial vehicles sold climbed 16.4 per cent to 2,805 units, with some market observers saying businesses were taking advantage of the federal government's business tax break.
In comparison, the sale of heavy commercial vehicles fell15.5 per cent to 383 units.
Nationally, new vehicle sales dipped 3.5 per cent, or 3,694, to 102,847 units.
Over the year to the end of June, 455,223 new vehicles were sold, down 16.1 per cent.
Passenger car sales fell 9.2 per cent to 55,837 units while sports utility vehicles dropped 4.5 per cent with 20,459 units retailed in June.
Sales of light commercial vehicles rose 15.5 per cent to 23,143 units while heavy commercial vehicles dipped 5 per cent to 3,408 units.
Holden had the top selling car retailing 4,748 Commodores.
Other top selling cars included the Toyota Corolla (4,060), Mazda3 (3,741), Hyundai i30 (2,742), Toyota HiLux 4x4 (2,658), Nissan Navarra 4x4 (2,266), Hyundai Getz (2,263), Toyota Yaris (2,194), Toyota HiLux 4x2 (2,098) and the Mitsubishi Lancer (1,904).
