WA lawyer to clean up world waste

PERTH lawyer Glen McLeod has been appointed chairman of the International Solid Waste Association’s (ISWA) legal issues working group and will oversee the drafting of a waste convention for adoption by the United Nations and government agencies worldwide.

Mr McLeod is president of the National Environmental Law Association and an environmental planning partner with law firm Minter Ellison.

Mr McLeod said the UN waste convention would require signatory nations to introduce and abide by a range of new laws.

The ISWA is a peak professional body for national organisations such as the Waste Management Association of Australia.

Its 1,200 members are drawn from 81 countries and include waste industry executives, consultants and engineers who are involved in waste management and environmental protection issues.

One of its primary objectives is to contribute to the search for waste management options for specific countries, regions and localities.

The UN convention will be prepared with the cooperation of various bodies including the World Bank, the World Trade Organisation and the UN Economic Committee for Europe.
