Unemployment in Western Australia retreated slightly last month, while the national jobless rate edged higher, new figures have shown.

WA’s unemployment rate fell 0.1 percentage point to 5.7 per cent in June in seasonally adjusted terms, the Australian Bureau of Statistics said today, but was flat at 5.6 per cent in trend terms.

Victoria was the only other state to report a fall in unemployment.

In seasonally adjusted employment terms, however, WA reported one of the largest decreases in June with a fall of 10,300 persons.

WA’s participation rate fell 0.1 percentage point in trend terms, and 0.6 percentage points in seasonally adjusted terms.

Nationally, the jobless rate rose 0.1 percentage point to 5.8 per cent in seasonally adjusted terms, and was flat at 5.7 per cent in trend terms.

Full-time employment rose by 38,400 jobs, while the number of part-time jobs was down by 30,600.

The participation rate rose to 64.9 per cent.
