WA energy report to be tabled today

The much anticipated review of state electricity generator Verve Energy, prepared by former Western Power executive Peter Oates, will be tabled in parliament by Energy Minister Peter Collier this afternoon.

The review was commissioned by the state government earlier this year to identify ways to stem Verve's ongoing financial losses and bolster its long term viability.

The government has already formally scrapped plans to reamalgamate Verve with retailer Synergy, based on the findings of the Oates report, but is expected to use the report as the basis for further widespread changes to the rules governing competition and relations between the two key former divisions of Western Power.

In particular, the report is understood to recommend sweeping modifications to the vesting contract which governs Verve's supply of electricity to Synergy.

Industry will be especially keen to examine the detail of the report, having been vocal in demanding the opportunity to comment on its findings before the government announces any further reforms of the local energy market.

Mr Collier last week pledged that industry would be able to review and comment on the Oates report before further changes were determined, as well as provide input to the government's recently announced plans for a strategic energy initiative to ensure a coordinated approach towards delivering secure and reliable long term energy supplies for the state.
