New motor vehicle sales in Western Australia stalled over the month of May with sales falling by 1 per cent according to official figures from the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries.
Figures reveal 10,067 cars were sold in the state over the month, compared to 10,172 cars that were purchased in the same period last year.
WA followed the lead of New South Wales which also experienced a decline in car sales over May, falling 1.2 per cent with 26,334 vehicles sold over the month.
South Australia recorded the highest increase of 5.3 per cent, Queensland reported a drop of 8.6 per cent and Victoria gained 7.7 per cent.
Over the May month, Western Australians favoured Toyota vehicles in terms of numbers with 2418 vehicles sold, while Holden came in second with 1253 purchased.
Percentage wise it was an increase of 6.2 per cent for Toyota while Holden fell 16.9 per cent. Ford dropped 5.4 per cent, Mitsubishi was stable with 619 cars sold, Nissan fell 10.4 per cent, Hyundai gained 6.9 per cent, Suzuki jumped 21.6 per cent and Honda fell 14.9 per cent.
Total vehicle sales across the country were stable over the month.
Meanwhile year-to-date figures for the state show an increase of 3.5 per cent in sales compared to last year, with 49,627 cars sold.
It compares to NSW which climbed 2.7 per cent, Victoria up 8.4 per cent, South Australia increased 8.3 per cent and Tasmania rose 6.3 per cent.
The Northern Territory saw the highest increase, climbing 12.3 per cent.
Total vehicle sales for Australia increased four per cent.
