Three shortlisted for Karratha revamp

National development giants Lend Lease, Australand and Mirvac have been shortlisted by the state government to develop five sites in Karratha's city centre and to develop a 160-hectare, 2,500 dwelling estate at Mulataga.

Regional Development Minister Brendon Grylls said the companies were selected from a "strong field" of nine developers that responded to LandCorp's expressions of interest for the project late last year.

"Having development companies of this quality focus their interest in the region is an historical moment for the people of Karratha and clear evidence that the 'Pilbara Cities' initiative is succeeding.

"They were chosen based on their demonstrated understanding of the complexities and importance of the project as well as their expertise and capacity to deliver."

The city centre redevelopment will feature medium density commercial, retail and residential opportunities.

Mr Grylls said the redevelopment of Karratha had been a high priority of the state governmnet's Pilbara Cities initiative, which was launched in November 2009.

"At that launch, the State Government made it clear we intend to bring real and lasting change to the Pilbara," he said.

"By forging solid partnerships with private developers, the Government will harness significant additional capacity to realise the growth plans for the region."

The developers will now advance to a request for proposal stage, where they will work with LandCorp to refine project concepts.

A winning proponent is expected to be announced in September.
