The Queensland purchases mark Tams' first expansion outside of WA.

Marine services company TAMS Group has expanded outside of Western Australia, acquiring two Queensland-based companies with a combined staff of about 150 employees.

Gladstone-based Mipec employs 120 people, while Cairns-based Taylored Offshore Services has around 30 staff.

Like Tams, Mipec provides port services, vessel maintenance, and engineering and construction services to the marine and resources sectors.

Mipec was established in 2004 and occupies six hectares of land and seabed lease in Gladstone, owning infrastructure including jetties and onshore facilities including a vessel maintenance yard.

Taylored is a diving-focused company offering inspection, repair and maintenance services to the resources, shipping, defence and marine infrastructure industries throughout the Northern Territory and Papua New Guinea.

Tams managing director Dyon Pilmoor said the acquisitions presented an opportunity for the company to expand its business beyond WA and to undertake larger projects across Australia and the Asia-Pacific.

“Tams and Mipec are similar companies structurally with similar service offerings, and we see this transaction as a good fit with many synergies, while Taylored Offshore Services strengthens our diving capabilities,” he said.

“We will work closely to support Mipec customers and have already commenced engagement with Mipec personnel and key customers to enable a collaborative transition with minimal disruption to service delivery.

“This acquisition marks another step in our growth strategy to create a streamlined marine organisation with locally staffed shorebase locations adjacent to major ports and resource export terminals.”

In September 2018, Tams announced it had opened three new permanent shorebases in Dampier, Port Hedland and Broome.
