TAMS Group has consistently added to its employee base and capabilities, despite an industry.

At a time when many of its competitors were slashing staff and cutting costs, Fremantle-based marine services firm TAMS Group maintained solid growth.

The widespread downturn in marine services activity in the oil and gas sector sent many firms scrambling over 2015-16, selling-off vessels or entire divisions in response to the changing market conditions.

TAMS, however, wasn’t one of those firms, with its steady growth recognised through its third Rising Stars award in the past four years.

From 2015-16 to 2016-17, TAMS grew employee numbers from 263 to 405, thanks to a strategic shift to diversify its service offering.

Established as diving and mooring business Total AMS in 1999, TAMS has evolved to become a fully integrated marine services firm, with its capabilities including provision of tug boats, work boats and vessel charters, as well as the supply and installation of dredging and mooring equipment, and the distribution of synthetic rope products.

TAMS’ operations stretch from its Fremantle headquarters to its Onslow Shore Base, which supports operations in Port Hedland, Cape Preston, Exmouth, Wheatstone, Gorgon and Dampier.

It’s that diverse service offering, and large geographical base, that has enabled TAMS to grow, even during a downturn, according to managing director Dyon Pilmoor.

“One division can be supported by the others if required,” Mr Pilmoor said.

“Our shore bases also ensure during quieter trading periods we are able to berth and store our vessels, plant and equipment at a minimal cost to the company.

“Our success has not been as a result of being in the right place at the right time or having the right asset at the right time.

“It has been through careful strategic planning, a diverse work capability and an internally bred culture to succeed.”
