Swan hospital land sale opens

The sale of the former Swan District Hospital site moved a step forward today as the state government opened expressions of interest in the old hospital as part of its land asset sales program.

It follows the hospital’s closure in November last year, at which time patients and staff moved to the new St John of God Midland Hospital, which cost $360 million and has 307 beds.

In November 2014, the grounds of the Kaleeya Hospital in East Fremantle were sold for $17.5 million.

The expressions of interest process for Swan District Hospital will be open for 10 weeks.

Lands Minister Terry Redman said the location, size and redevelopment potential of the site was expected to generate considerable interest, subject to zoning approvals.

"The site has 15 one and two-storey buildings - two of which have been identified as potentially adaptable for reuse - and a number of off-street car parks," he said.

The process for the 10.6-hectare site will be managed by LandCorp.

Mr Redman said the potential sale of under-used land assets would generate revenue that would contribute to reducing the state's debt levels, which are expected to peak at around $39 billion by the end of this decade.
