Stop in for a quiet one at Kuppa

CLAREMONT’S Kuppa won’t be extending into the vacant site next door. Manager Andrew Moody says while the prospect of expansion was raised some time ago, the team at Kuppa was deterred by high rent.

What Kuppa is doing, however, is serving alcohol after 12am without a requirement to purchase a meal. Kuppa applied for an extended licence to open until 2am from Thursday to Saturday earlier this year.

Making the Kuppa licence application a little more interesting was the appearance of BGC managing director Julian Ambrose, who often drops in for a meal with friends, as a witness before the liquor licensing court. Julian said he enjoyed visiting Kuppa because it was a sophisticated venue. The director of liquor licensing has agreed, and while there are minimal conditions imposed, Kuppa patrons can enjoy later nights, with a good glass of wine, until 2am Thursday through Saturday.

Ian Love’s proposal to develop the Bellhouse Cafe on Mends Street Jetty has met with fierce opposition from local residents. A petition with 194 signatories was put to a special council meeting of the City of South Perth last month proposing a refusal of the application. The application is currently before The Swan River Trust. Acting manager Darryl Miller would not speculate as to when the trust would make its recommendation to Environment Minister Judy Edwards.

Bacco Restaurant’s Ivan Rutherford has told Gusto that, while everything has a price, he is not actively selling the Italian restaurant and that it is merely closing on Tuesday and Wednesday – the new winter trading hours.

He told Gusto a new winter menu had been launched and it was business as usual.

Several calls to Bacco this week left us with the message: “We are closed at present for winter renovations until further notice”. Ivan has not, as yet, returned Gusto’s calls to find out just what renovations were taking place.
