The state government has purchased the former Esplanade Hotel site at Albany’s Middleton Beach for $7 million and has awarded property developer LandCorp $1.5 million to provide early work at the site.

The purchase of the land on Flinders Parade was partly funded with $3.3 million from the state government’s Royalties for Regions program.

The funds provided to LandCorp also came from the program.

Premier Colin Barnett said the site, which has been vacant since the former Esplanade Hotel was knocked down in 2007, would again become a vibrant and useful part of the Middleton Beach precinct.

“The empty lot has been a blight on what is one of the most beautiful beachside locations in the state,” Mr Barnett said.

“Ideally we will see a mixture of retail, commercial and residential opportunities here.”

Regional Development and Lands Minister Terry Redman said the $1.5 million given to LandCorp was to improve the site through road realignment and subsequent landscaping.

Registrations of interest will be sought to develop the site.
