State Transport Minister Simon O'Brien has awarded over $4 million worth of contracts to several businesses for the upgrade of several bridges and the Bussell Highway.
In a series of announcements made today, Mr O'Brien said Roadswest Engineering Group WA Pty Ltd had been awarded a $940,000 contract to upgrade two timber bridges in the Great Southern region.
Work will commence in March on the bridge over the Balgarup River on the Kojonup Frankland Road and the bridge crossing the Carlecatup Creek on the Marron Poole Road.
The upgrades are expected to be completed in August this year.
Meantime Densford Civil Pty Ltd has been awarded the $850,000 contract to upgrade two bridges built in the 1960s in the Shire of York.
The bridges are on Mannavale Road and Qualen West Road
Work is due to start next month and expected to be completed by July 2009.
Additionally, the ongoing upgrade to the Bussell Highway between Vasse and Margaret River has received a $2.6 million boost from the government.
The latest upgrade will focus on the 3.2 kilometre section of the highway between Boundary Road and Treeton Road.
"The section of highway will be widened to provide sealed shoulders to prevent single vehicle and 'run-off-road' type crashes, prevalent in this area," Mr O'Brien said.
"Works include construction of a passing lane for northbound traffic between Treeton Road and Webster Road."
Southern Road Services has been awarded the highway contract.
Finally, Mr O'Brien announced today that major construction has started on the $52 million second stage of the Geraldton Southern Transport Corridor, which will remove heavy and oversize vehicles from built up areas west of the city's airport.
The project will see the construction of 8.7km of new highway between North West Coastal Highway and the Geraldton-Mt Magnet Road.
Abigroup is the contractor for the project and work is expected to be completed early next year.
