State awards rail extension deal

The state government has awarded an $8.8 million contract for the construction of bridges for the extension of the rail line in the northern suburbs to a joint venture between Bocol Constructions and R J Vincent and Co.

The contract includes three concrete road-over-rail bridges, bridge abutments and associated road works, lighting, the relocation of underground services and landscaping and fencing.

Transport Minister Troy Buswell said the first bridge would be built at Butler Boulevard near the site for Butler Station, and the other bridges at Landbeach Boulevard and Benenden Avenue.

"The Butler extension will provide a valuable transport service to the rapidly-growing northern communities, and will also ease pressure on the Mitchell Freeway and major road corridors," he said.

"More than 2,000 passengers are expected to board at the new Butler Station each week day."

Work is expected to start in June.
