Sailing aboard Star Flyer (right) is an experience to be savoured, like a fine champagne – slowly, almost subliminally. It is possibly best described as a unique combination of sailing tradition and pampered vacationing.
This is not a cruise ship but more a time warp to the finest days of the grand sailing ships, albeit with a cocoon of luxury, privacy and the latest in technology.
When you step aboard you are greeted by antique paintings and prints, teak decks and mahogany rails mixed with the latest in communications.
The Star Flyer is 115 metres long and carries just 170 passengers, so you feel more as though you are on your own private yacht, but the sur-prise is that you have more outdoor space than on a traditional cruise ship.
And there are all the features of a cruise ship: indoor-outdoor tropical bar, piano bar, Edwardian-style library, two swimming pools, and the list goes on. There are no rigid schedules and the captain briefs passengers each day on some of the entertainment or sightseeing options.
