Stadium to kick cars out

PERTH’S new soccer stadium could pose serious problems for CBD commuters.

About 80,000 commuters come into the city each working day – many in their cars.

However, the proposed stadium is likely to be built on the Enter-tainment Centre car park, one of Perth’s best-used parking spots.

The car park has space for 615 cars and eight motorcycles.

The soccer stadium will be constructed as part of the Perth Convention and Exhibition Centre.

Both bidders for the convention centre construction contract have indicated they would build the soccer stadium on the Entertain-ment Centre site.

The Nexus consortium, made up of Lend Lease, John Holland, Compass-Eurast Australian Convex and Channel 7, wants to build the convention centre next to the stadium.

The Multiplex Consortium, comprising Multiplex Construc-tion and Accor Asia Pacific, wants to build the convention centre on the car park adjoining the city busport.

This could exacerbate CBD parking problems further as this site incorporates 1,223 fully-used bays and room for thirty-six motorcycles.

A spokesman for Tourism Minister Norman Moore said, until the preferred tenderer was announced on 5 July, nothing could be said about what would happen to parking availability.

However, even if public car parking is proposed for the stadium and convention centre, it is clear that the Entertainment Centre car park – and possibly the busport car park – will be out of action for at least part of the construction period.
