Sleepers chased

WA RAILWAY operator Westrail is seeking proposals to find acceptable alternatives to timber sleepers.

WA Transport Mini-ster Murray Criddle said, while Westrail’s specifications allowed higher levels of defects and timber used had no other commercial use, the State Govern-ment recognised public concerns and the need to pursue alternatives.

Westrail will not be allowed to purchase sleepers cut from

timber that has a higher value-added use,” Mr Criddle said.

Concrete sleepers are already used on heavily trafficked lines and will be used exclusively on extensions to the urban system.
