Shortlist for Port Hedland tower

Four contractors have been shortlisted to build a new $70.7 million marine control tower in Port Hedland for the Pilbara Ports Authority.

Doric, Jaxon, McConnell Dowell, and Pindan made it past the expressions of interest phase, and will submit tenders for the design and construction of the new marine control tower and operations centre, which is expected to be operational in 2018.

The project also includes the demolition of the existing 45-year-old control tower.

“Once completed, the Integrated Marine Operations Centre will oversee the safe and efficient movement of increasing numbers of vessels through the bulk export port,” PPA said in a statement.

“It will cater for the harbour master operations, dredging management, port security, vessel traffic services system and equipment, marine pilot briefing facilities, and improved incident control facilities.”

By the time the new tower is operational, it is anticipated that around 6,000 vessels will move through the channel and offshore anchorages at the port each year.

Tender submissions will be due early next year.
