Multinational retail discount store Costco has received development approval to open a second store in Western Australia, planned for Casuarina, within the City of Kwinana.

The Outer Metro Joint Development Assessment Panel gave the project the green light this morning.

The development application, led by Rowe Group, proposes a bulky goods showroom and a separate petrol filling station, representing a collective project value of $25 million.

Located on Orton Road and Thomas Road, the new Costco complex plans to also feature a 827-bay car park, with buildings (including the complex and petrol station) to comprise 1.4 hectares of the 6.5 hectare site.

The development application estimates the total number of staff employed at the site to be about 250 people.

The state’s first Costco store, located near Perth Airport, opened in March this year to fanfare, with media reporting queues wrapped around the entire complex.

The Casuarina warehouse will be Costco’s 12th store in Australia.

The American retail chain entered the Australian market in 2009 opening a single store in Melbourne, since expanding its footprint to New South Wales, South Australia, Brisbane and Canberra.

In 2018, Costco managing director Patrick Noone told realcommercial.com.au that the group had been well received in Australia and that it would continue to expand, with the aim to open “at least one new warehouse every year.”
