Scott Park

SCOTT Park has always wanted to be in charge of his own destiny and from a young age developed a game plan to one day own his own building company. That plan has paid off, with Scott Park Homes now the state’s third largest home builder, with 1,000 constructed last financial year. In 1998, the then 29-year-old Mr Park and an associate established the company with a staff of four in a small Osborne Park office. Scott Park Homes now has 102 staff, 350 sub-contractors and boasts an annual turnover of more than $108 million. Mr Park’s ‘game plan’ involved him gaining grassroots experience as a sub-contractor carpenter, followed by building studies at Tafe and a traineeship in building, supervision. The biggest challenge he faced as a new builder was gaining the confidence of industry players. The HIH insurance fiasco also presented problems for the growing company, which was subjected to limits placed upon it by insurance providers. Not wanting to break his commitment to his customers, Mr Park worked closely with insurers at this time to gradually increase the insurance limit in line with the company’s own growth plan. He believes teamwork developed in a positive environment and staff training are the keys to the success of his business. Mr Park’s philanthropic interests include raising funds for suicide prevention charity, Youth Focus, sponsoring its bike ride and building a charity home at cost. He recently left the company and is hoping to build on his success with plans to establish a new building operation.
