Saracen confirms worker fatality

Saracen Mineral Holdings has confirmed the death of one of its underground miners following an incident at the Dervish gold mine in Western Australia.

Saracen announced the incident yesterday, saying the worker had “fallen from a height” at the Dervish site, which is part of the company’s Carosue Dam operations.

The incident was reported to the Department of Mines Industry Regulation and Safety, which had sent out representatives to the mine site, south of Laverton.

Saracen managing director Raleigh Finlayson expressed his condolences to the worker’s family, friends and colleagues.

“This is an extremely tragic accident and all our thoughts are with his family at this very difficult time,” Mr Finlayson said.

“The health and safety of our people is always our first priority.

“Saracen is currently working closely with the WA Department of Mines Industry Regulation and Safety on the continuing investigation, while working with our contract partners to ensure full support is provided to the family and all Saracen employees and contractors.”

Saracen’s Carosue Dam operations remain suspended, with the company due to provide an update tomorrow on the resumption of activities.

The company also remains in a trading halt, expected to lift tomorrow with Saracen’s announcement.
