Southern Cross Electrical Engineering has announced $69 million in new contracts in the Pilbara and northern Goldfields.

SCEE said today it had won an electrical, instrumentation, communication and process control plant infrastructure package for the Tropicana gold project, 330 kilometres north east of Kalgoorlie, worth $40 million.

Tropicana is a joint venture between Anglogold Ashanti and Independence Group.

Works under the contract will commence immediately and conclude in May 2013.

SCEE managing director Simon High said the company looked forward to working with AngloGold and engineering contractor Lycopodium to deliver the project.

Also today, SCEE said that its overhead powerline construction subsidiary, KJ Johnson & Co, had won a $29 million contract with Rio Tinto at the Yandi iron ore project in the Pilbara.

Rio is upgrading its existing overhead line distribution at Yandi, located 97 kilometres north-west of Newman, which supplies power to various mine facilities in the area.

The contract is the second portion of a two-stage works package.

“We are extremely pleased to be awarded the second portion of this contract,” Mr High said. “WE consider that this demonstrates to the market the capability and competence of our infrastructure business to undertake large complex overhead powerline projects of this nature.”

The powerline works are expected to be complete by January 2014.

At 1:00PM, WST, SCEE shares were steady at $1.15.
