Roxby’s fine art for design

AFTER initially mistaking it for a map of a foreign country, The Note has admired the Marilyn Monroe tribute made out of coffee cups, which adorns a wall at the Art Gallery of Western Australia’s Caffissimo coffee shop (see photo below). Although The Note’s knowledge of and taste in art are demonstrated by the fact that something outside the Gallery impresses more than most things inside, the Subiaco-based Roxby Architects, which designed the coffee shop, have recently won two awards for retail and hospitality design at the Design Institute of Australia Awards. The awards recognised Roxby’s unique and original architectural designs at two iconic Perth locations - Boffins Bookshop in Hay Street and Caffissimo. Roxby director Michael Roxby said the company’s design approach goes beyond just creating visually exciting retail environments. “A successful combination of appropriate materials, signage, form and function are meaningless unless we are helping our clients make money in a very competitive retail market. It comes down to understanding how customers shop," Mr Roxby said.
