Ripper of a budget

THE state government revealed a $1.275 billion budget surplus last week with infrastructure, community development and disability services the big winners. Other winners include education and training, with funding increases of $260 million plus 88 new teachers, and health, which attracted an extra $904 million in the coffers over four years and 200 full-time nurses. Unfortunately there was no tax relief for business in treasurer Eric Ripper’s sixth budget. Instead the government will wipe $1.3 billion off the state debt, claiming that would put the Perth to Mandurah rail line in the black.
