Cattle and lamb slaughters have continued on a strong upwards trend in September 2014, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Cattle and lamb slaughters have continued on a strong upwards trend in September 2014, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Cattle slaughter was up by 1 per cent to 787,000 head, continuing a substantial increase since a low of 591,800 in May 2012 in trend terms.

That figure made it the highest monthly slaughter on record.

Western Australia was up by 600 for the month, to 36,600, around 4.7 per cent of the national total.

Lamb slaughter was also up 1 per cent, to 1.9 million head, after falling to 1.44 million in March 2011.

WA again performed strongly, up by around 3,000 for the month to 187,800.

Sheep slaughter fell 2 per cent for 794,000 head in the month, while calves also fell 2 per cent to 51,800.

The number of pigs slaughtered remained steady at 405,000 head.
