Reader Response: A really big idea

I READ with interest your article headed ‘Big ideas: WA unlimited’ in the March 20 edition of WA Business News. Apart from some very minor points at the edges, the article is misnamed; it should be ‘Big ideas: PERTH unlimited’. As a resident and business operator in regional Western Australia, the best thing we could do is to get rid of the never ending greedy drain on the state’s resources by Perth, which contributes nothing in return. Every economist you talk to refers to WA’s wealth coming from the regions and yet by every measure, every piece of infrastructure and government service is grossly inferior in the regions compared with Perth. We even now have the medical profession saying people in the country don’t live as long as those in Perth because of the lousy standard of health services in the bush. The solution? Secede all the regions out of WA, or simply kick Perth out of the state so the regions can get on with what they do so well without having $19 out of every $20 created in regional WA stolen by Perth. Now that’s a big idea that would actually achieve something. Paul Browning Kalgoorlie
