The South Hedland landfill's tyre stockpile poses a fire risk.

Local contractor AK Evans Earthmoving will shred and bury up to 6,000 tonnes of tyre waste at the South Hedland landfill as part of a new contract with the Town of Port Hedland.

The company will initially process 3,000t from the historical stockpiles at the facility, with up to another 3,000t to be handled later in the year.

The contract is valued at $958,000, with the first round of work to be completed mid-year.

Port Hedland Mayor Camilo Blanco said the contract would support local jobs.

“The merit-based awarding of the tender to a Hedland business supports our local industries and jobs,” he said

“The future prosperity of our town is dependent on maintaining positive relationships with local businesses and developing local employment opportunities.”

Mr Blanco said that processing of the tyre stockpiles would also mitigate significant public health and safety risks.

“It was previously assessed that the current tyre stockpile posed the risk of a fire occurring,” he said

“I am pleased the tender has been awarded, providing the community the certainty we need that the issue is being proactively addressed.”
