Police in parliament search

WA Police have executed a search warrant at Parliament House this afternoon, just days after South West politician James Hayward was charged with child sex abuse.

Today, a spokesperson for WA Police confirmed Child Sex Abuse Squad officers had attended parliament as part of an ongoing investigation.

Mr Hayward appeared in Perth Magistrates Court last Thursday on child sex abuse charges, allegations understood to relate to an incident involving an eight-year-old girl earlier this year.

The 52-year-old was released on bail and is due to appear before the court on December 13.

While he was elected in the March state poll to the Legislative Council as a representative for The Nationals WA, Mr Hayward resigned from the party late last week following the charges.

The former state president of the WA Nationals had served as shadow minister for water, local government and regional cities.

Prior to his time in parliament, he had been a City of Bunbury councillor.

His media company Firey Productions entered voluntary liquidation in September, owing more than $300,000 in taxes.

Legislative Council president Alanna Clohesy confirmed police attended Mr Hayward's office this morning.

"The Department of the Legislative Council cooperated with police and according to the terms of the Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) agreed to recently," Ms Clohesy said.

"The police were attended by an Officer of the Parliament at all times."
