Pindan wins $58m Karratha contract

Property and construction group Pindan has been awarded the design and construction tender of the $58 million Karratha Leisure Complex.

The Shire of Roebourne has announced Pindan as the successful tenderer for the project which is being built on Dampier Highway on a shared site with the Pilbara TAFE and Karratha Senior High School.

The indoor sports and aquatic centre will feature three swimming pools, a children's water playground and separate indoor playground, sports playing fields, a clubhouse, indoor and outdoor courts, a fitness centre, crèche, cafes, function rooms, and office space.

Pindan Contracting managing director Tony Gerber said the group had recently completed similar projects, including the Fitzroy Crossing aquatic centre and the design and construct of the Pindan-built Onslow multi-purpose facility.

"Our experience will stand us in good stead in designing and building the Karratha Leisure Complex - like this project, the Onslow facility, just handed over, doubles as a welfare and evacuation centre for residents to take shelter during cyclones," he said.

The design and development process has begun and construction is scheduled to kick off before the year is out.

The Complex is due to be finished in early 2013.

Pindan is also currently constructing the Baynton West Family Centre in Karratha as well as managing the development of a 24-hectare lot in Karratha's Nickol West estate on behalf of specialized WA property funds management group Otan.

As well, the group's modular housing arm, Formas, is putting the finishing touches on a $5 million grouped housing development in Karratha's Tambrey estate, building a display home in the Baynton West Display Village, and installing six transportable homes in Baynton West on behalf of WA surveying services company Land Surveys and with a further 20 homes to be constructed in the North West.
