The ACCC says petrol prices in Australia are currently at the lowest level in more than two years.

Petrol prices in Perth were the highest among any state capital in Australia for the most recent two quarters, according the Australia Competition and Consumer Commission.

In the December quarter, petrol prices in Perth averaged 144.4 cents per litre, the highest out of the five capital cities.

Every other capital city recorded average prices below 143.4 cents, with Sydney the lowest at 137.9 cents.

In the March quarter there was a fall in petrol prices across the countries.

However, average prices in Perth still remained the highest in Australia, tied with Brisbane, at 131.9 cents per litre.

This was 5.6 cents per litre higher than in Sydney, 1.5 cents more than in Melbourne and 1.2 cents higher than in Adelaide.

But there was an upside for Perth motorists, as the ACCC highlighted that only Perth has a day per week where petrol is consistently cheap.

“These days, only Perth has a regular cycle, and there we should talk about ‘cheap Mondays’,” the ACCC said.

“Consumers understandably find it very confusing to know when to fill up in the other four major cities.”

The ACCC said current petrol prices in Australia were at their lowest level in more than two years, but flagged price increases across the country in the near future.
