Penalty for land clearer

A Perth company has been fined $56,000 for illegally clearing 18 hectares of land, destroying native vegetation and wildlife.

Between late 2011 and early 2012, Southregal unlawfully removed native vegetation, including peppermint trees up to four metres high, at its property in Bouvard.

The land was home to 12 mammal, 21 reptile and 46 bird species, and site inspections after the clearing found a dead western ringtail possum and south-west carpet python, the Department of Environment Regulation says.
