Pacific rim woos Australian produce

WA food manufacturers are invited to export to South Pacific, Hong Kong and Canada in April.

The Australian Trade Commission (Austrade) has revealed growing trade figures, and a preference for Australian-made produce in the key markets of the Pacific Region, Hong Kong and Canada.

They are large export markets for Australia and offer exporters many opportunities, especially in the grocery sector.

To promote Australian products in these markets, Austrade is holding Grocery Sampling Week from April 2-6, to showcase WA food and beverage products to buyers, importers and distributors in these markets.

The sampling will be organised by Austrade’s offices in New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Hong Kong and Canada (both Vancouver and Toronto). Buyers from the grocery trade in these markets are already lined up to participate.

After Grocery Sampling Week, Austrade will send feedback and assist with any follow-up or negotiations.

Many participants in last year’s Grocery Sampling Week achieved direct sales or trial orders, some appointed distributors, and others are continuing their negotiations.

Grocery Sampling Week is the first step on the export road and companies must be prepared to be pro-active and responsive to trade inquiries, including personally visiting the market.

Senior trade commissioner for New Zealand and general manager South Pacific Leith Doody said “GSW provides Australian food producers with a low-cost and low-risk opportunity to reach a multitude of potential buyers in the South Pacific region, Canada and Hong Kong.

“GSW is unlike any other tradeshow as it offers international buyers a unique opportunity to attend an invitation-only private sampling of a range of Australia produce.

“Suppliers are not required to visit the market for the promotion, although they will need the ability to follow-up if their product is successful.

“Australian food and beverage exports to the South Pacific region, Canada and Hong Kong generated approximately A$573 million, A$265 million and A$723 million respectively during 1999- 2000.”

The sampling will take place in Austrade’s offices in New Zealand, Fiji, New Caledonia, Papua New Guinea, Canada and Hong Kong and key buyers, importers or brokers from each market will be invited to participate.

To participate in Grocery Sampling Week, call Austrade on 13 28 78 for your information pack.

Or you can obtain the details from www.austrade.gov.au/Exhibitions (under Trade Events).

Grocery Sampling Week is a valuable opportunity to market-test products with key players in the trade.

Registrations to participate in Grocery Sampling Week close Monday, March 5.
