Prime Minister Scott Morrison has called a special meeting of national cabinet later this week to consider a proposal to strengthen the COVID safety of international travel processes.

Premiers and Chief Ministers are expected to meet early on Friday morning to discuss further measures that can be implemented from airport arrival to final clearance from hotel quarantine, as proposed by chief medical officer Professor Paul Kelly.

It is understood there will also be an update on the federal government's vaccination programme, which is now expected to be available in early March for frontline workers and those working in hotel quarantine.

This afternoon's announcement comes just hours after Premier Mark McGowan called for national cabinet to reconvene to discuss matters related to COVID-19, including international border arrangements and the roll-out of a vaccine, and days after confirmation that three returned travellers in WA hotel quarantine had tested positive for the UK strain of the virus.

“I would urge the commonwealth to recall national cabinet to discuss this and other issues,” he said.

“Clearly the roll-out of the vaccine nationally is something we should all work on together.

“We also need to discuss the UK variant and what we can do to protect Australians.

“Clearly, the quicker a vaccine is rolled out, the safer our country will be."

While acknowledging that international borders were a matter for the federal government, Mr McGowan said he believed travellers should be tested prior to boarding a flight to Australia.
