October Federal Court date for iiNet

iiNet is scheduled to head to the Federal Court in early October after a group of film companies alleged the internet service provider infringed copyright rules.

AFACT, the Australian Federation against Copyright Theft, launched legal action in November last year, claiming iiNet had not enforced its own terms and conditions to prevent known unauthorised use of films and television programs by customers.

The group represents Village Roadshow, Universal Pictures, Warner Bros Entertainment, Paramount Pictures, Sony Pictures Entertainment, Twentieth Century Fox Film Corporation, Disney Enterprises and Seven Network.

Late last week, iiNet lodged its defence evidence to the court and stated that it did not is any way support or encourage breaches of the copyright law.

iiNet also claims that AFACT did not use the process, as stipulated by law, for investigating copyright theft or any other illegal activity using the internet.

An iiNet spokesperson told WA Business News the case will be heard by the Federal Court starting October 6 this year after all evidence is received.

Shares in iiNet were unchanged at $1.20 at 15:45 AEDT.
