Murdoch University professor of sustainable agriculture, Nick Costa, has been appointed as chairman of Meat and Livestock Australia’s environmental science advisory panel. The panel will assist Australia’s livestock and red meat industries to actively assess their environmental footprint and develop sustainable systems to meet challenges such as climate change and global warming, competition for land use, efficient use of freshwater in production systems, and preservation of ecosystems and biodiversity. Professor Costa said the newly appointed panel would be a sounding board for the industry, identifying knowledge gaps and future opportunities for research, and advising the MLA on the context and scientific background of media articles, web sites, and significant government reports on the environment and red meat.
