KEY members of the Eastern Regional Council of the Chamber of Minerals and Energy have thrown their weight behind advanced mining rock mechanics research by becoming foundation sponsors of a professorship in this area.
The sponsoring companies Gold Fields, Placer Dome Asia Pacific, Barminco, MPI Mines, KCGM and Newcrest Mining have agreed to fund the Western Australian School of Mines Industry Chair in Mining Rock Mechanics for five years.
The WASM’s parent institution Curtin has also agreed to sponsor the position.
Ernesto Villaescusa will continue to hold the chair. He has held it since 1997 but the position has been funded by WASM.
"The significance of research into rock mechanics to the mining industry is increasing as the life of a mine increase and underground mines become deeper," Professor Villaescusa said.
